What does getting pinned mean?

For instance in Bye Bye Birdie in the first song (the telaphone hour) there are lyrics like "well I heard they got pinned, I was hoping they would" and "did they really get pinned? did she kiss him and cry? did he pin the pin on? or was he too shy?" I don't really get it, what does getting 'pinned' mean?
