Why do most people on Answers give 'thumbs down' for legitimate answers?

There are many reasons people do what they do and too many to list however consider the purpose of Q&A.... ask questions, give answers. Then consider the thumbs. They do absolutely nothing as far as the quality of the answer itself and just something to distract users more concerned with them than giving good answers.
